Hunting for Life on Mars by Studying Life on Earth

چکیده
Modern-day Mars is a dry, harsh environment with no surface water, but billions of years ago it might have been water-rich, like Earth. Scientists believe that, as water was lost on Mars, the remaining would become increasingly salty and rich in sulphur. By researching environments Earth similar chemistry, we can develop hypotheses about whether life could existed Mars. In our research, studied Colour Peak, sulphur-rich, spring system Canadian High Arctic. This contains bacteria that use sulphur to get their energy. studying sediment samples from this region, confirmed used an energy source potentially lived These results help scientists who are analysing data missions identify evidence former

A multi-user integrated suite of instruments designed to optimize the search for evidence of life on Mars is described. The package includes: -Surface inspection and surface environment analysis to identify the potential Mars landing sites, to inspect the surface geology and mineralogy, to search for visible surficial microbial macrofossils, to study the surface radiation budget and surface oxi...
متن کاملLife on Mars?
Usually it takes a juicy sex scandal, a military invasion, or an airliner crash to get a story on page one of the newspapers two days in a row. But science reporters across the United States managed this feat in early August, when NASA scientists announced that they’d found “compelling evidence” of fossilized life from Mars. The story broke when a trade paper, Space News, nonchalantly published...
متن کاملBiota and Biomolecules in Extreme Environments on Earth: Implications for Life Detection on Mars
The three main requirements for life as we know it are the presence of organic compounds, liquid water, and free energy. Several groups of organic compounds (e.g., amino acids, nucleobases, lipids) occur in all life forms on Earth and are used as diagnostic molecules, i.e., biomarkers, for the characterization of extant or extinct life. Due to their indispensability for life on Earth, these bio...
متن کاملFind Life on Mars entry
Georgia Tech expects to compete in Find Life on Mars with at least two (and potentially four) robots operating as a cooperating group. Research at Georgia Tech and elsewhere has demonstrated the speed and robustness afforded by multiple robot cooperation (Balch et al. 1995a, Balch and Arkin 1995b). The robots, Nomad 150s from Nomadics Technologies, are pictured in Figure 1. The Nomad 150 is a h...
